At the dawn of the 21st century, magic—once regarded as mere myths and fairy tales—has evolved into a sophisticated technology, now taught as a technical skill. At First High School, an institution for magicians, students are divided into two categories based on their entrance exam results: "Blooms," who score highly, are placed in the First Course, while "Weeds," the reserve students, are assigned to the Second Course. The Irregular at Magic High School follows the story of siblings Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba, both attending First High School. Miyuki, a prodigy, is placed in the First Course after excelling in the exam, while Tatsuya, who scores poorly, is relegated to the Second Course. Despite his low magical aptitude and status as a "Weed," Tatsuya is far from ordinary—he possesses unparalleled technical expertise, remarkable combat abilities, and unique magical skills, making him an anomaly at the magical school.
